Effects of Neutral Amino Acids on Aerobic Metabloism of Central Nervous System in Rabbit

Abstract
This experiment was carried out to investigate the aerobic metabolic function of GABA and glycine on central nervous system. The oxygen consumption rate of the slices of cerebral cortex, cerebellum, ventral and dorsal part of spinal cord in cervical and lumbal enlargement portion of rabbit were determined using the Warburg¢¥s manometic apparatus supplying 100%0= with or without substrate in the Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate buffer Medium (pH7.4)
The results are summarized as follows:
1. Glycine decreased the oxygen consumpition rate of brain whereas is inconspicuous in the spinal cord.
2. GABA increased the oxygen consumption rate of brain whereas decreased that of ventral and dorsal spinal cord in lumbal enlargement portion significantly. According to results of the above findings, it may be speculated that GABA may be utilized as oxydative substrate whereas glycine can not be oxydized in the brain level. The inhibitory effect in oxydative metabolism is best seen in the lumbal spinal cord
